If the Mahatma be an ideal,
For public men to follow,
In truthfulness,
And renunciation of spirit;
The virtuous person should shun,
The path of temptation.
Honesty being the best policy,
For men of a certain age and inclination.
In the realm of public affairs,
Where the stage is an arena,
Where promises are empty,
Where men wield power over other men,
Every word is weighed,
And no word is forgotten.
Yet a simple soul can go,
Where others fear to tread,
Borne on the wings of angels,
With a prayer upon his lips.
At home,
It would be best no secrets are kept,
Between man and his god,
As none are kept,
Between a child and his parents.
