A visit to the Elephanta Caves constitutes an unforgettable experience – for the common man or for the tourist. Though it may be difficult to find time in a busy schedule, a visit to the Elephanta Caves is a must; especially for someone who is visiting Bombay after a long time.

The journey starts from the Gateway of India. Tickets are easily available, and they are not very costly. The trip takes a mere forty-five minutes by launch, which is a negligible amount of time for any experienced traveler. If one comes fully equipped with a pair of binoculars, or a camera, the journey will be a memorable one. A unique sight greets one at the threshold of the sea: that of the receding Bombay skyline…

Though not many people know about this, Elephanta Caves is a protected habitat for many types of birds and animals. For lovers of nature, this is a veritable treat. There is greenery everywhere - and for the convenience of travelers, there are some forest paths by means of which the tourist can go around the island. Some tourists prefer to take the help of a tourist guide to get detailed information about the tourist locales. But persons of an independent nature may prefer to make their own way, despite the presence of the tourist guides. Yet others prefer the help of a guide book, which proves sufficient for most tourists. However, one would be well advised to wear shoes instead of sandals!

The Elephanta Caves are world famous for its stone statues and for its temple architecture. It is noteworthy that these have been carved from the face of the hills. Many tourists are eager to see the statue of Ardhnarishwara (Lord Shiva and his female aspect combined), because they would have heard a great deal about it. In our scriptures, it is mentioned that the true nature of Lord Shiva is revealed in the unity of opposites. There are many other well known statues as well – but none so famous.

Thankfully, there are no hotels on the island, though tea and refreshments are readily available. There are a number of lovely picnic spots where one may take lunch. Perhaps, this is the reason that the natural beauty of the island has been preserved; and the Elephanta Caves are such a popular tourist destination. One can enjoy eating snacks under the shade of the trees…

A word of caution nonetheless – the statues and the temples are under the protection of a troop of monkeys!

When the tourist reaches the other side of the island, a panoramic view of the vast expanse of the ocean greets him. And along with the rays of the setting sun, his journey comes to an end here. Evening is the time to return to Bombay. Even though launches are available till late in the evening, this is not advisable as the sea gets somewhat unruly. And all tourists are warned about this before they set out itself. On the return trip, the tourist has another chance to enjoy Bombay’s skyline (in which the Gateway of India is quite prominent). The journey ends where it began – at the Gateway of India.

Most tourists appear to be in a pleasurable frame of mind. While some are discussing the caves, others are quietly smiling to themselves! Though the journey is not long enough that a pleasurable acquaintance can be converted to an abiding friendship, it provides a welcome relief from the routine of daily activity. The journey is both interesting and entertaining; and without any inconvenience whatsoever, the tourist can catch a glimpse of India’s rich cultural heritage. Indian or foreign national, alone or with family, he will not return dissatisfied. It is well worth the money – especially for the middle class tourist with limited means.

Many tourists resolve (in their minds) that if they have an occasion to visit Bombay again, they would definitely like to see the Elephanta Caves one more time! The happy and peaceful environment is one that appeals to most persons. Definitely, it is an experience to be remembered.
