Individuality is the central concept in our lives. But it is not a measure of one’s importance, or the total worth of one’s being. True, individuality is the foundation stone of the concept of existence. And to give it vigor, and to sustain it, we seek self - fulfillment. The world of illusions (that we perceive of as reality) is centered around the individual. Growing unease at the existential fact (that life has an end) underlies existence, and forces us to close our eyes to the material world – and open them to the world beyond. In the long run, the matter of death is bound to crop up as an important question. And compel us to clear away the muddle in the mind – that comes to a person involved in the materialistic web of cause and effect.
The loss of an important mooring or landmark in life may result in a reorientation of our goals – and may lead to a purposeful effort to fulfill the same. If one feels increasingly alienated from society as a whole, it is left to close friends, family or colleagues to anchor one to reality. One should not be bothered if others disapprove of our actions. Compensatory mechanisms are perpetually at work (to make up for lost ground) so as to maintain a minimum level of self-esteem that would enable us to claim compatibility with society. All they show is our ability to cope with the social institutions that govern us. Nor should they result in the loss of our confidence in ourselves – or in our ability to transcend the social norms. The incongruence – bordering on a sense of alienation – that one feels derives from being labeled an outsider; in our own minds, if not in those of other people.
One lives in a world of make-belief, in a world of dreams, inhabited by a host of imaginings that light our house like chandeliers. But which is revealed with great force by the penetrating dawn of reality. It is only this light from the external world that enables us to see ourselves in proper perspective, free from interference. In the form of a narration, the dreamer dreams of the life beyond, and of a succession of parallel worlds. Eternal and timeless, these worlds of fantasy intermingle with the real world in the realm of thought. A succession of dreams portrays the voyage from one world to the other, or the flow of ideas from the global mind to the individual mind. Events have a symbolism in the other world, and their description and interpretation takes place by the dreamer. Like our life upon the earth, the life beyond can also be portrayed as an eternal struggle between good and evil – or, more to the point, as the awakening of the individual soul to its full potential.
